The history of the city dates back to 1931 when Frederick C. Peters, Plantation's founding father, moved his family from Missouri to a sparsely populated area near the current-day city. During this time, the Peters family introduced the popular Florida Red Potatoes and soon developed an interest in cattle. It was this interest in cattle that led him to discover that the area of Plantation had an excellent irrigation system that was necessary for the growth and maintenance of crops and grass.

In the 1940s, Broward County, like the rest of the nation, experienced tremendous economic growth and expansion due to World War II. People were attracted to Florida for its tropical climate and inexpensive, undeveloped land that had a natural canal system. Signs that advertised land for "$10 down, $100 a month" were scattered along Florida's early highways. In 1941, Frederick C. Peters took advantage of this deal and bought 10,000 acres for $250,000.

The City of Plantation was officially founded on April 30, 1953 with a population of less than 500 and with a budget of only $1,288. The residents of Plantation incorporated to provide control over building and to keep other cities from coming in and annexing the area. Despite the city's tremendous growth, Plantation remains a small town at heart that offers its new residents a wonderful place to call home.
